The Ice Age National Scenic Trail

As the colossal glacier retreated, it left a great diversity of geologic features considered to be the finest examples of continental glaciation anywhere in the world.

The Ice Age National Scenic Trail follows the features that mark the furthest advance of the last glacier and is the only national park that commemorates the effts of continental glaciation in the United States.  It also became a state Scenic Trail in 1987.  IN the est, the Trail begins in Potawatomi State Park on the Door County shores of Lake Michigan.  It winds through the Kettle Moraine almost to Illinois, then moves north to the Antigo Flats and then on to the Western Terminus at Interstate Park.  Most of the Trail is a walking tour of glacial formations.  But occasionally the Trail takes you right down the main streets of some charming Wisconsin communities, such as Kewaunee WI.

Because of its tremendous geologic significance, the Trail is one of the only eight national scenic trails in the country.  Despite its federal and state status, it has always been and will always remain a citizen-driven effort.
